About... The 93,000
citizens of Yuma, AZ, are blessed with year round availability
of its most bountiful resource, the sun. Prospects for immediate
commercial real estate growth appear good, but the city remains
burdened by one of the country's highest unemployment rates,
23.8 percent as of March 2012.
Located in the southwest corner of the state and serving as a
transportation hub for goods from Mexico, the transportation sector
showed a loss of 3.2 percent April 2012, representing an
improvement over more steep previous losses. The information and
other services sectors had the biggest losses.
Major employers in the city include the Marine Corps Air Station
and Yuma Proving Ground, the defense military technology testing
facility. The region’s medical center is included along with the
county government and the United States Border Patrol. Many people
find seasonal work among various fruit and vegetable companies. The
seasonal lost of such employment sometimes reflects major changes
in the unemployment rates.
The education and health services and leisure and hospitality
sectors had visible gains. To find employment, job seekers should
check the Yuma Private Industry Council website for
recent job openings and resources. Because many people are
unemployed, competition is high. Persistence is
warranted.
