More formally
known as the City of San Buenaventura, this uniquely situated
city has capitalized on its both proximity to the coast and on
its history of good business dealings and ethics. Formed around
one of the original Spanish missions in California, Ventura has
held onto its cultural roots while still embracing such modern
concepts as surfing and high tech manufacturing.
In the 21st century, Ventura is home to an amazing diversity of
cultural attraction. For instance, in addition the attractions,
themselves, the city’s Fairgrounds host a speedway, regular
pari-mutuel horse racing, and a concert venue that has seen the
likes of everyone from the Grateful Dead to Justin Bieber.
On a more commercial note, the city is known as an incubator of
high tech companies but still keep maintains a firm grasp on the
counter-cultural and the environmental. In fact, the world
renowned, outdoor apparel, company, Patagonia, is based in the
city.
To the outsider the city may seem to be divided into two parts, the
surfers on the shore and the businessmen on to the east. While
there is a certain divide, many of those businessmen were once part
of that surfer community. In short, Ventura offers an interesting
experiment in the cross-pollination of the renegade surfer ethos
and traditional business practices.
