About... Vallejo,
California is the largest city in Solano County with a
population of 115,942 in 2010. Furthermore, it is the tenth most
populous city in the San Francisco Bay area. In its eventful
past, Vallejo has served as the capital of California
twice.
Named for founder
General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, Vallejo was established in
1844 as part of the Rancho Suscol Mexican land grant. As the
city grew, its prime northern Bay location established it as an
impressive shipping center. The Mare Island Shipyard, built in
1854 and California's first established shipyard, provided not
only a major naval hub but also jobs for many of the city's
residents building and repairing ships.
Shipping continued to
be the primary industry until the eventual growth of automobile
and plane travel reduced its demand.
In 2008, city council
filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, citing overblown salaries for
public safety workers, policemen and firefighters; but in 2012 a
city-wide participatory budget program, allowing city residents
and business owners to discuss budget allocations and city
projects.
Today Vallejo's major source of employment is
healthcare, with nonprofit providers Kaiser Permanente and
Sutter Health housing major medical centers in the city. The
other major industry is tourism. It is home to Six Flags
Discovery Kingdom, the Mare Island Historic Park, and the
Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, as well as sharing other
Bay Area attractions such as Napa Valley.
