About... Many small cities
across the Midwestern US have become economic casualties of the
shift towards a knowledge-based economy. The city of Terre
Haute, Indiana is no different.
The city was once home
to Coca-Cola’s bottling operations. Root Glass Company was the
location where the original curved Coca-Cola bottle style was
designed. The Coca-Cola facility is now a distribution center.
The Columbia House mail-order club was based in the city. After
a merger with competitor BMG, operations in the city closed.
The economic hardships of the city are well-documented in local
media. In 2003 the Indianapolis Star labeled Terre Haute as a
“model of stagnation” because of the city’s high unemployment rate
and low college graduate retention. Unemployment continues to be a
problem for Terre Haute. The unemployment rate in the city as of
November, 2011 was 10.4 percent, 1.7 percent higher than the
nation’s unemployment rate of 9.7 percent.
Terre Haute has worked hard at improving its lot and its image. The
city was given the title of Community of the Year by the Indiana
Chamber of Commerce in 2010. The city also has a strong higher
educational system and is in the process of redeveloping its
downtown area.
The city has a long
way to go, but significant steps have been taken to improve the
local economy -- and thus the prospects for job
seekers.
