About... Though largely
considered just a suburb of nearby Detroit, Sterling Heights is
actually the fourth largest city in the state of Michigan. For
most of its history, the economy of the city was largely
dependent on the automotive industry. While this fact is still
true, the city has had to reinvent itself and has developed a
strong local economy to replace the jobs lost from its larger
neighbor.
The city’s population has a strong ethnic component with large
contingents of Polish, Irish, Italian and, most recently, Iraqi
residents. Sterling Heights is known for its dedication to its
heritage and is the scene of several regional festivals including
Sterling Fest and the American-Polish Festival which hosts the
largest number of Polka bands anywhere in the nation.
At one time, Sterling Heights was integrally connected to the city
of Detroit. Changing times have forced the city to depend on its
own resources. These days, the city boasts a thriving downtown, a
wonderful family community and a relatively exciting nightlife. In
short, it offers singles, couples and families a taste of the good
life in a convenient and affordable package.
