About... St. Cloud lies in
central Minnesota, 64 miles northwest of the St-Paul-Minneapolis
area. The county seat of Stearns County, its population of over
65,000 is one-third of the surrounding metropolitan area. This
area is altogether the third largest in the state.
The city was once the center of major granite quarries. Railroad
lines grew to accompany its many inland waterways, making it a busy
transportation hub and way station for industry and agriculture.
St. Cloud University is the state's second largest higher education
institution and has been a major employer.
The unemployment rate in the city at the end of January 2011 was
5.6 percent, representing an improvement from 7.1 percent in 2009.
Recovery from the recession, however, has been dismally slow
compared to the general trend of Minnesota. The state had a job
growth of one percent over 2011, whereas the St. Cloud metropolitan
area had experienced a 0.2 percent decline.
Twelve-month sector economies by December 2011 showed 3.8 percent
change in professional and business services and 1.7 percent in
education and health services. There were no changes in financial
activities, education or trade, transportation, and utilities. The
city is projected to experience slow economic recovery and
growth.
