About... Springfield has
long been the most enterprising city of western Massachusetts.
Sitting east off the Connecticut River, the city has been a
transportation hub that gave rise to the Smith & Wesson gun
manufacturers and the Fortune 100 Massachusetts Mutual Life
Insurance company. The city's over 150,000 residents are part of
the 700,000-populated Metropolitan Springfield area opposite
Greater Boston.
An independent spirit roots the city with landmarks of Shay's
Rebellion and the high-ground Springfield Amory among others that
figured importantly in the American Revolutionary days. The
Merriam-Webster dictionary manufacturers still exist in the City of
Firsts that was once home to the Charles Goodyear rubber plant and
remains the finding home of basketball.
The economy is diverse as is its population. Fifty percent of the
75 percent white population is Hispanic. African Americans comprise
18 percent of the total. Job Seekers will have opportunities in
accommodation and food services, educational services, construction
and public administration.
Baystate Health is completing a Hospital of the Future costing $300
million, and Big Y, the Regional chain of supermarkets, is
headquartered here. The Knowledge Corridor, extending through
Hartford-Springfield, seats over 32 universities and colleges
including world class Amherst, Smith and Mount Holyoke.
