About... Besides being
known as the best wine producing area in California, the 150,000
residents of Salinas are proud of rooting the home of John
Steinbeck. The city has a museum dedicated to him, preserving
some of the places he has written about as cultural monuments.
Along with grapes, Salinas produces 80 percent of the country's
lettuce crop.
Situated eight miles from the Pacific Ocean within a great
irrigation area as the county seat of Monterrey, the city's economy
has been primarily based on agriculture. Building, grounds cleaning
and maintenance occupations follow agriculture as the most common
occupation. White collar positions make up 45.5 percent of the
working population with the remainder going to blue collar
positions.
The recession and its aftermath have caused high unemployment. It
reached 15.3 percent by Feb. 2012. There has been considerable
improvement. The unemployment rate was 9.5 percent by July 2012.
Total non-farm employment reached 3.5 percent in July from
February's 2.8 percent.
In July, Salinas gained 4,300 jobs. Sectors showing improvements
were education and health services; trade, transportation and
utilities and professional and business services. The government
sector had a decline of -2.2 percent. A good source is the online
Californian.com website.
