About... It may seem
unusual that a city situated so far north would be called the
“Cherry City,” but the climate of the Willamette Valley that
surrounds Salem is ideal for the cultivation of this fruit.
Salem’s economy is still centered around farming and
agricultural processing but, as the state capital, it has seen
its economy diversify into several other important business
sectors.
While the state government and Willamette University are two of the
city’s largest employers, private interests such as silicon wafer
manufacturer, Sumitomo, and the Spirit Mountain Casino also have
sizable workforces in the city.
Salem is the site of many summer festivals including the Oregon
State Fair. Tours of surrounding vineyards and wineries also drive
the local tourism industry. Downtown features a well preserved
historic district that is the area's center for artistic and
cultural pursuits. Other areas of the city offer a diverse dining,
shopping and entertainment menu.
The city is also renowned for it devotion to he surrounding forest
areas and was formally designated a “Tree City” by the National
Arbor Day Foundation. It is home to almost 400,000 people and
provides an affordable, beautiful standard of living in the Great
Northwest.
