About...
Rochester is a
city of over 200,000 people in New York, on the south side of
Lake Ontario. It was founded in the early 1800s, and grew
quickly as a center of flour production, as local rivers
provided power to run its mills.
The city was home to
Frederick Douglass for a while, and it was the birthplace of
Susan B. Anthony. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries, several major corporations set up shop here,
including Eastman Kodak, Xerox and Bausch and Lomb.
Getting to Rochester is easy. It is right off Interstate 90, and
three spurs connect it to the highway. It is served by both an
international airport and a port on Lake Ontario. Amtrak, Greyhound
and Trailways all have lines to the city.
In addition to the corporations mentioned above, major employers
include Western Union, the Gannett newspaper corporation and the
Genessee Brewing Company. Several universities and colleges are in
the area, including Rochester University. The city has four major
hospitals.
For entertainment,
there are also several minor sports teams.
