About... Rochester is the
home of the renowned Mayo Clinic, a world-respected healthcare
and research facility. Founded by Dr. William W. Mayo and his
two sons as St Mary’s Hospital in 1889, the clinic currently
services 2.75 million visitors annually. As the seat of Olmsted
County in southeastern Minnesota, the nearly 107,000 residents
make up the state's third largest city.
The city has been ranked by various national media as one of the
best places to live with excellent quality of life and high worker
productivity. Its most common industries include health care and
computer and electronic products. The most common occupations are
computer specialists and medical personnel.
The city's largest employers include Mayo Clinic, IBM-Rochester,
electronic manufacturer Benchmark and Seneca Foods Corporation.
Unemployment figures were 4.9 percent in December 2011, falling
from the 2009 recession rate of 7.0 percent. Surrounded by rural
communities, Rochester is expected to experience positive labor
force growth rate.
Through 2011, there has been noticeable economic sector growth in
professional and business services, education and health services
and in government. Manufacturing experienced minimal growth while
information services showed a 13.3 percent decline. In 2009, 38
percent of the residents had bachelor's degrees or
higher.
