About... Brazilian navel
oranges grew in Riverside, CA, during the 1870s rooting the
city's early economic success as a prosperous citrus grower. It
became home to the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, a historic
landmark hotel whose Presidential Lounge was frequented by
several presidents including William Howard Taft and Theodore
Roosevelt.
The city's economy was
hit hard by the recession, and it hasn't recovered from the
housing bust. Its 303,000 citizens, forming the "Inland Empire"
with San Bernardino, faces one of the highest unemployment rates
among the country's large cities, at 12.8 percent by March 2012
and 11.8 percent by May.
Jobs are hard to find
and homelessness is increasing. Nearly half of the residents are
Hispanics. Civic efforts are being made to increase educational
opportunities and reduce gang activity.
Major employers are in
the trade, transportation and utilities and the government
sectors. The first grew 1.5 percent year-to-year May and the
latter contracted 2.0 percent. The professional and business
services sector grew 8.7 percent, and significant growth was
experienced in most of the other sectors. The County of Riverside Human Resources
Department lists job openings with resources at its website,
as does the city at its Human Resources website (listed
above).
