Nicknamed Steel
City because the massive amounts of steel it produces, Pueblo,
Colorado, is a manufacturing town quickly recovering from recent
economic downturns. Although manufacturing and steel production
are down throughout the country, other businesses have popped up
in Steel City to fill the gaps.
The largest employer is the school district, with over 2000
employees. Colorado State University’s local branch has over 500
staff. Parkview Medical Center, ST. Mary Corwin Medical Center, and
the Colorado Institute of Mental Health employ well over 3,000
medical professionals combined. Retail, customer service, and small
manufacturers are other large employers. Vestas, a wind mill
manufacturing company, has announced plans to build the world’s
largest wind turbine plant in the city due to studies listing
Pueblo as Colorado’s best place for solar energy.
The city is sometimes called the Home of Heroes because it’s
produced four Medal of Honor Recipients, more per capita than any
other city.
Colorado’s State Fair and parade are held in the city, along with
an annual Chili Festival, the Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals,
and a rodeo that draws visitors from across the nation all take
place in Pueblo. Steel City shows no sign of letting decreased
manufacturing slow it down.
