About... A truly singular
city, Providence is more than a century and half older than the
United States, and its metropolitan area has a population half
again as large as its own state. Indeed, the city boasts a long
and storied history.
Providence was once the home to numerous fishing, agricultural and
manufacturing endeavors. The late 20th and early 21st centuries
have seen it grow into a largely service industry economy. It is
home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning
including the venerable, Ivy bedecked Brown University.
As the capital of the more accurately named state, Rhode Island and
the Providence Plantation, the city also houses a significant
number of government offices and agencies. As such, there are
significant numbers of commuters from and to the surrounding areas
as far as Boston, Massachusetts.
The city has long held a charm for tourists with a historical bent.
Now, self styled as the “Creative Capital,” it hosts innumerable
artists, artisans and entrepreneurs. Pardon the pun, but the city
is a veritable beehive of activity. For quality of life, a vibrant
cultural mix and an entrepreneurial atmosphere, no city in New
England can compare with this fascinating and beautiful
city.
