About... Poughkeepsie, New
York is known as "The Queen City of the Hudson," and was founded
by the Dutch in the 17th Century. The city was also New York's
second state capital, shortly following the Revolutionary
War.
In the 19th Century, Poughkeepsie was a major shipping hub along
the Hudson River, including many paper mills, breweries, and
hatteries along the Hudson itself. The city also attracted many
prominent families, including the Vanderbilts and the Astors, due
to the area's proximity to New York City and its natural
beauty.
Today, the city is known for IBM's large corporate campus,
specializing in many job opportunities in software and hardware
design, as well as being the location that created the "Deep Blue"
mainframe that bested the famous chess master, Garry Kasparov, in
1997. Poughkeepsie is also known as a major regional transportation
hub, featuring an extensive rail and road network connecting to New
York City, located only an hour and 45 minutes away. The city is
also home to the well-known Vasser College, with its extensive
liberal arts curriculum.
With its extensive transportation networks to New York City and the
location of IBM's large campus, Poughkeepsie today remains "The
Queen City of the Hudson."
