About... Portland, the
largest city in Maine, contains one- third of Maine’s
population. Because of its large port, Portland has become an
economic powerhouse for the state of Maine. Positioned on the
Casco Bay Peninsula, Portland was founded in 1632 as an
exporting center for pines.
The city was
considered an employment haven after the financial crisis of
2008 because of its low unemployment rate in comparison with
other states. Part of the city’s financial success is due to the
Portland- Montreal Pipe Line, which is a crude oil pipeline that
extends from South Portland to Montreal.
Although the local
economy was once primarily focused on manufacturing, fishing,
and agriculture, it has slowly shifted towards a service- based
economy.
Because of the city’s strong economy, Forbes magazine ranked it #1
for “America’s Most Livable Cities” in 2009.
