The 164,000
residents of Port St. Lucie, itself a young community reaching
maturity through the 1990s, have recently added Tradition as one
of Florida's new large, planned developments. The recession
forced severe economic collapse on the city's housing market,
and it has only begun a turnaround.
The city has a
suburban character. It's the location of the PGA Center for Golf
Learning and Training and provides a spring training practice
field for the New York Mets. In proximity to Port St. Lucie are
the Kennedy Space Center, Walt Disney World and Sea World among
other major attractions.
The unemployment rate
was 9.8 percent year-to-year in April 2012. Most of the economic
sectors had experienced significant job losses. The
manufacturing and information sectors had no change while the
government sector had a small gain.
Major employers
include Liberty Medical Supply, the home shopping multinational
corporation QVC and local government. Biotech and digital film
companies are rooting in the city via the establishment of
Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and an animation
studio of Domain Media Group. The state has a workforce
