About... Though still known
as the “Steel City,” the economy of Pittsburgh has shifted
significantly towards high technology. There are still 300 steel
related companies in the city and surrounding counties but there
are now more than 1500 technology related businesses in the same
area. The city is also the healthcare, education and financial
hub for all of eastern Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley.
The business climate is sound in what is now known as the “City of
Bridges.” PNC Financial, H.J. Heinz Company and Dick’s Sporting
Goods, all Fortune 500 companies, are based in the city and are the
forefront to an economy based on engineering , finance, high tech
and the service industry.
Pittsburgh is regularly touted as the most livable city in the
United States by the magazines Forbes and The Economist. It boasts
its own symphony, ballet troupe and opera house. It is also home to
numerous museums, zoos and botanical gardens.
Pittsburgh has long ago shorn its rust belt image and has
enthusiastically embraced the technologies of the 21st century. The
locals, known as Yinzers from the local dialect, would tell that
the future is bright for businesses and residents alike in this
multifaceted city.
