About... It is a testament
to the growing population of the American Southwest that this
city now has more residents than its namesake in Illinois. A
suburb of Phoenix, this city draws much of its economic activity
from its larger neighbor but also contributes a significant
amount of its own especially in sports related activity.
Peoria was originally settled as an agricultural community
alongside the tracks of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
It prospered somewhat but did not really bloom until the
introduction of air conditioning in the 1950s. This innovation and
the continued development of nearby Luke Air Force Base spurred
increasing amounts of economic activity.
These days, Peoria is experiencing a new expansion as it is the
fifth fastest growing city in the U.S. In the new millennium, the
city is more focused on tourism and high tech however. One hand,
the city has embraced technology with the recently completed
Maricopa Solar Power Plant - it is one of the most advanced of its
kind in the world - and on the other, the city loves its sport and
is home to the spring training camps of the Sand Diego Padres and
Seattle Mariners.
Peoria is an excellent destination for tourists, families and
business people. It focus is on growth and on providing the best
possible opportunities for its residents.
