About... Paterson, New
Jersey became the locus of original American industry and
manufacturing, beginning with Alexander Hamilton's 1791
consolidation of the Society for the Establishment of Useful
Manufactures to harness the energy of the Great Falls of the
Passaic River. Water driven mills led to the production of
textiles, Colt firearms and railroad steam engines and the rise
of silk industries.
“Silk City,” home of Allen Ginsburg, has had a colorful history,
making it a symbolic source for literature and film. It became an
icon base of skilled immigrant workers and labor strife culminating
in the 1913 Paterson silk strike. The popular Hinchliffe Stadium,
home to Negro National League baseball teams, was built in the city
along with airplane engines during World War II. The city maintains
a rich ethnic diversity among its 146,000 residents of whom 30
percent are recent immigrants.
Patterson had been plagued by industrial decline and was hard hit
by housing foreclosures during the recession. January 2010
unemployment was 18.3 percent. It dropped to 14.4 percent November
2010. After devastating floods from Hurricane Irene last year
August, unemployment had increased to 15.4 percent November 2011.
In spite of a new downtown mall, employment struggles to
recover.
