Palmdale is in
that part of the Mojave Desert separated north from Los Angeles
by the San Gabriel mountains. Its 152,750 residents comprise one
of the fastest growing cities of California with thriving
industries that have resulted in its nickname as the "aerospace
capital of America."
Sharing an economy with its northern sister city Lancaster and
northern Los Angeles county, the city's unemployment spiked over
the recession from 6 percent in 2006 to 14.7 percent in March 2012.
The city's most common industries for males are construction and
transportation equipment and for females are health care and
educational services.
The most common occupations are other production occupations and
electrical equipment mechanics for males and other office and
administrative support workers and for women, preschool,
kindergarten, elementary and middle school teaching. The major
employers are Lockheed Martin, Northrop Gunman, Antelope Valley
Mall and the city's school district. Wal-Mart, Boeing and the
county also have significant numbers of employees.
