Ogden holds Utah's
second largest transportation hub. In 2002, 70 percent of the
city’s 82,000 residents were affiliated with a religion, of
which 83 percent belonged to the Mormon Church. As the seat of
Weber county, the city centers a major population area of a half
million residents in northern Utah.
The housing market had suffered from the recession and has still
not stabilized, and prices are expected to fall 3.7 percent this
year in Ogden. The city had an 8.0 percent unemployment rate in
February 2010 that fell to a national low of 5.9 percent by January
2012.
The metropolitan area, which had an unemployment rate of 6.4
percent, has shown major employment gains in the mining, logging,
and construction sector and also in the information sector. Gains
are improving and holding in the trade, transportation and
utilities and professional and business services sectors.
Major employees in Ogden include the Internal Revenue Service and
MarketStar Corporation, a management consulting firm. Other
employers are Weber State University and McKay Dee Hospital. Job
seekers with engineering degrees are highly sought. Wayfair, an
online home furnishing retailer, is a major new employer and
Levolor, Inc., expects to retain manufacturing jobs.
