About... Norman's 112,400
residents comprise an educational community 25 miles south of
Oklahoma City. It is home to the University of Oklahoma and
holds the county seat for Cleveland County. Its Chamber of
Commerce boasts a literate population where 43 percent of the
residents have bachelor degrees or better.
The University is known for its School of Meteorology and the
location of National Weather Center. The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration also shares research facilities. More
tornadoes have taken place in the city's area than any other place
in the nation. The nation's largest concentration of French
Impressionist art is at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on the
University campus.
Top employers are the University, which employs over 11,000
residents, and the Norman Regional Health system, employing 2,300.
The public school system and Johnson Controls follow. Private
employees include Hitachi Computer Products, Inc., Office Max and
AT&T. The Moore Norman Technology Center provides training,
education and consulting services to individuals and
businesses.
Norman fared well through the recession, sharing the strong economy
of the state. The city's unemployment rate was 5.5 percent July 10,
falling to 3.7 percent April 2011. It was 4.7 percent July
2011.
