About... New Orleans is one
the United States' most distinctive cities. Known by numerous
nicknames, from "The Crescent City" due to its valuable location
along a bend of the Mississippi River to "The Big Easy," in
reference to its easy-going, jovial nature. Since the
devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many have been
interested in how New Orleans has recaptured its earlier growth
and glory.
Located along the Gulf Coast of the southeastern US, it has around
350,000 residents in the city itself and 1.2 million people living
in the general metro area around the city. Because of the city's
location and culture, its main industries are tourism;
entertainment; oil/gas and related industries; large scale
manufacturing of ships, boats, and airplanes; and of course, its
port which is one of the country's largest and busiest.
New Orleans is home to one Fortune 500 company, Entergy, an energy
utility and nuclear operations specialist. Many other large
companies have their headquarters or major operations in New
Orleans, including IBM, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Rolls-Royce,
Popeye's Chicken, and Harrah's Entertainment.
The city also has a number of major universities and hospitals, as
well as other significant professional services. The uniqueness of
the city's atmosphere coupled with its strong, varied economic base
make it a prime spot to conduct business -- and to begin a
career.
