citizens of Midland sit next to the Permian Basin, one of Texas'
primary oil reservoirs and responsible for one-fifth of the
nation's total natural gas and oil production. The city is the
county seat of the same-name county and is often combined with
Odessa as an economic metropolitan area.
Midland-Odessa is
currently experiencing a resurgent oil boom due to technological improvement in
hydraulic fracturing of natural gas and oil deposits.
Unemployment for Midland was 3.8 percent in May 2012. The
mining, logging, and construction sector has experienced
significant job growth. Employment rates increased 15.8 percent
year-to-year for December 2011 and 7.7 percent by May
2012.
The professional and
business services and leisure and hospitality sectors have shown
significant job growth increases of at least 4 percent by May
2012. Lofty increases in monthly year-to-year job growth are
expected to continue through 2012.
