About... Lowell, known as
the birthplace of the American industrial revolution, is located
about 30 miles northwest of Boston and is the fourth largest
city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The city has a
population of 106,000 residents, about 55,000 of whom are
members of the labor force.
The largest industries in Lowell are in the manufacturing,
education, health and social services sectors. Once a manufacturing
powerhouse, the city's many historic textile mills have been
adapted for new and diverse uses, and now house modern office
space. Among other major employers that operate in the city are
Coca-Cola, JP Morgan and Enterprise Bank & Trust.
Small business has
seen a resurgence as well, with dozens of new shops, restaurants
and service companies added to the picturesque streets of the
downtown area in recent years.
While wages lag slightly behind those found in the larger cities of
Boston and Springfield, the median income in Lowell is in line with
the national average. Those seeking to join the workforce will find
that opportunities abound in any number of trades, from education
and support positions at the University of Massachusetts to
construction jobs offered in one of the city's revitalization
projects, and everything in between.
