Virginia: Admitted to the Union as the 35th state during the
tumultuous years of the American Civil War, West Virginia distanced itself from
the seceding Confederate states. As such , it played an important role as a
border state in that conflict. The state would forever prosper from that
decision as it would avoid many of the depredations visited upon Virginia
proper.
The “Mountain State” is an apt nickname and the state is renowned for all types of
outdoor activities involving the Appalachians including hiking, climbing and cave
exploration. The mountains have also provided vast natural resources in the form of
timber and coal that have fueled the state’s economy for the past 150 years.
Despite its apparent isolation and lack of size, the West Virginian economy would
be the 64th largest in the world, if the state were an independent country. Coal
mining is still the largest economic sector in the state but allows West Virginia
to be net exporter of electricity. Health care and retail are the other two most
prominent commercial sectors.
The lifestyle of the state is dominated by the peoples of Appalachia. There are
numerous fairs and festivals dedicated to this culture. In short, West Virginia
offers an affordable and unique opportunity for both businesses and people.
