About... Lewiston, Maine, a
city of 40,000 residents, is usually associated with its sister
western city and Androscoggin County Seat, Auburn. The cities
together designate the Lewiston-Auburn region, home to 60,000
residents in the south-central part of the state.
Lewiston follows Portland as Maine's second largest city. The
country's northeastern-most state, Maine borders Canadian provinces
New Brunswick and Quebec. Lewiston's ancestry is 48 percent English
and Irish and 25 percent French-Canadian. Since 2009, the city has
experienced growth of an enterprising Somalian and African
community.
Until the 1950s, Lewiston had a thriving industry based on textiles
promoted and driven by the water-powered Bates Mills and a series
of canals on the Androscoggin River. Determined policies of
economic diversification have worked steadily to revitalize the
city from a period of economic stagnation. Old mills property and
the city’s downtown have been reconverted to accommodate new
commercial properties, businesses and residences.
Major areas for job seekers are the education and health services
followed by the trade, professional and business services.
Employers include Central Maine Health-care and St. Mary’s Regional
Medical Center local facilities, an expanding Wal-Mart Distribution
Center, fiber-optics maker Oxford Networks, Northeast Bank and
Bates and Lewiston-Andover colleges.
