About... The economy of
Lawton is stabilized by Fort Sill, a major military
establishment steeped in the area's history with Native
Americans. The fort began as a large military post and
reservation and holds the graves of Geronimo and other Indian
leaders. American Western culture and early settlement is shown
at the Museum of the Great Plains and the Comanche National
Museum and Cultural Center. The U.S. Army Field Artillery Museum
traces historical armaments to the present.
Located in southwest Oklahoma, the city's over 96,000 residents
contribute a strong distribution and retail base in cattle and
agriculture to the state's prospering economy. The city had avoided
the speculative pitfalls of the recession, but had lost jobs.
Unemployment was 7.0 percent December 2011, and most sectors
reflected year-to-year job losses.
Mining, logging and construction and information sectors had
stabilized without significant losses through 2011. Significant
losses were shown by other services; financial activities;
education and health services; and leisure and hospitality. The
manufacturing sector is demonstrating substantial turnaround
activity.
Major employers have been Fort Still, Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Company, public schools, Comanche County Memorial Hospital and
Wal-Mart. Job seekers will find the online Lawton Constitution a
good source of employment.
