About... Lafayette,
Louisiana is one of Louisiana's top five cities in population
and is the heart of the historical Acadiana territory of the
southern United States. It was founded in 1821 as the town of
Vermilion, but was later renamed for a French military hero who
had fought with the United States in the Revolutionary War. It
is now a city of 120,000 residents in a region with a population
density of well over 500,000.
The regional economy was primarily agrarian until the discovery of
significant natural resources during World War II. Much of the
northern part of the state still is agricultural, but Lafayette is
centrally located in Cajun territory and is rich in Louisiana
tradition. The economy is also largely driven by an active retail
community, but the tourism business may the area's real economic
impetus.
Baton Rouge and New
Orleans are both in reasonable proximity.
Lafayette does feature some manufacturing economy, though it is
generally limited. It is also home to the University of Louisiana
at Lafayette, along with several other regional technical schools.
The region is a leader in excellent healthcare facilities that
serve the entire state in terms of both medical training and
treatment.
