Midwestern business-transportation hub that joins it with Kansas
City, Missouri, encompassing two million residents. Locally, the
city headquarters the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and
serves as the county seat of 250,000 residents.
Recent Tenth District Federal Reserve Bank figures have shown the
city’s manufacturing sector entering recovery since mid-2011. Major
areas of employment have been education and health services,
manufacturing and retail trade, professional services, and
transportation and warehousing.
The largest employers of the county include the University of
Kansas Medical Center, General Motors and public school and
government bodies. The General Motors Fairfax Plant has been one of
the long-term employers showing rejuvenated growth along with Sara
Lee Corp, Associated Wholes Grocers and Cerner, an international
health care technology consultant. Hollywood Casino at Kansas
Speedway is planned to open in February.
Google has brightened the economic outlook of Kansas City by
selecting it as a location for a pilot fiber-optic, high-speed
network. The new infrastructure is planned to expand into the
larger sister city and bring gigabyte-speed broadband to the area’s
residents and new generation, cloud-based technologies to its
businesses.
