About... Kalamazoo is a
charming city of southwestern Michigan with a population close
to 75,000 residents. It is the home of Western Michigan
University, a county seat and the major metropolis of the nearly
325,000-populated Kalamazoo-Portage area.
In the early 1800s, Kalamazoo lost its original namesake after
eccentric town founder Titus Bronson was booted out of town for
stealing a cherry tree. The city has had a rich variety of
industries and agricultural production. It has a vivid arts scene
and is known for Bell's Brewery among others and the A.M. Todd
peppermint flavoring company.
Gibson Guitar Corporation left and the Heritage Guitar company
rose. Cabs of the Checker Motors Company were once made in the city
and Upjohn pharmaceutical company is now owned by the Pfizer
Corporation. Educational services top the list of most company
industries.
Kalamazoo unemployment decreased from 9 percent in 2009 to 8.7
percent by mid-2011. A modest economy recovery is expected fueled
by Michigan's auto parts industry. There were minimal gains in
manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, information and
professional and business services. Goods-producing industries are
expected to rise by 1.8 percent in 2012, and service-providing
industries are expected to rise by 1.9 percent.
