About... Inglewood has a
long and storied history in regards to race relations in
California. For the first half of the 20th century, the city was
a whites-only bastion that only desegregated its schools in
1970. A rising African–American middle class rapidly changed the
population mix of the city after this point and, in the 21st
century, the city has developed a strong Hispanic as well as
African-American population.
The city’s economy is predominantly dependent on retail as most
residents commute to Los Angeles or one of the other surrounding
communities for work. Inglewood is the home of the famous Hollywood
Park Racetrack which is a major employer and taxpayer for the
city.
While the city retains its working class roots, it has also striven
to increase the culture and artistic opportunities for its
residents. The city boasts the Southeast Symphony and the Open
Studio Project. Both organizations are non-profit entities that
encourage a multi-cultural approach to the arts.
While the city of Inglewood may have a checkered past, it future is
surely bright. In the 21st century, it offers employment
opportunities, an affordable way of life and access to the
multicultural attractions of the greater Los Angeles
area.
