About... Independence,
Missouri has over 115,000 residents and shares the county seat
of Jackson County with Kansas City, falling under the latter’s
metropolitan area and general economic outlook. The city is home
to the Community of Christ contingent of the Latter Day Saint
movement, along with other sects of the religion.
As a frontier town, Independence prospered and was formally
recognized as the beginning of the Oregon Trail. The city suffered
through several Civil War battles, finally losing to the
Confederates in October 1864. The famous residences and library of
President Harry S. Truman are located here and the birthplace of
his wife, Betsy. Truman’s career as a Jackson County administrative
judge brought improvements and prominence to Independence.
In 2009, the most common industries in the city were construction,
accommodation and food services; professional, scientific, and
technical services; public administration, and metal and metal
products. The most common occupations were sales workers and truck
drivers; electrical equipment mechanic; installation and
maintenance positions and other production occupations.
Major employees include Alliant Tech Systems, Burd and Fletcher box
manufacturers, Centerpoint Medical Center, Sprint Relay Center,
State Farm, Unilever and the school system. The city posts job
openings on its website.
