About... Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania, nicknamed Pennsylvania's Capital City, was named
the second best place in the U.S. for raising a family by Forbes
in 2010. The magazine's ranking is a testament to the city's
comeback from 1981, when it was named the second most distressed
city in the country. Reliable state and federal employers have
replaced unstable manufacturing industries, and now the city is
considered one of the most recession-proof in America.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the largest employer, with
nearly 25 thousand employees working at the downtown Pennsylvania
State Capitol Complex. The federal government employs another 17
thousand. Penn State's in-town campus employs another 10 thousand,
and Hershey's nearby plant employs 8 thousand. Several Fortune 500
companies are headquartered in the city.
Harrisburg offers an interesting blend of high-brown and down-low
culture. The Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest indoor
agricultural event in the United States, is held every year at the
Expo Center. A city orchestra and multiple jazz festivals play in
The Forum, a large concert and lecture hall in the State Capitol
Complex.
Pennsylvania’s Capitol City owes much of its success to the Capitol
Complex, which will offer Harrisburg stability for decades to
come.
