About... Hagerstown serves
as the transportation and commerce hub for much of Western
Maryland and parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It is the
county seat of Washington County, and has a population of
39,000. The city's prominent railroad industry and interstate
highway crossroads inspired the fitting nickname of the "Hub
City."
The once dominant industrial economy of Hagerstown has
significantly diversified in recent decades. Manufacturing, while
still maintaining a strong presence in the city, has declined and
been supplemented by advances in the retail, service and tourism
sectors. The greater metropolitan area boasts retail density that
ranks among the highest in the country, and the city itself has two
major shopping malls that support 200 stores and associated service
businesses.
Prospective job-seekers should be aware that median income in the
city is depressed in a way that is typical of rural areas in
Western Maryland and West Virginia. The 2008 census estimated that
18 percent of the population were below the national poverty
threshold.
However, the
employment outlook is not all doom and gloom. The metropolitan
area surrounding Hagerstown is still growing, and there are
plenty of corresponding opportunities for the largely
blue-collar workforce.
