About...
The
Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area locates both cities as seats
of Harrison County along the Mississippi Coasts and includes
neighboring Hancock and Stone counties. The area's population
was close to a quarter-million residents. Losses sustained from
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 have had considerable impact on the
area.
The economy of Gulfport-Biloxi reflects that of Mississippi: It
faces a period of slow growth from the recession compounded by the
Katrina recovery. Many of the hurricane-damaged casinos have been
rebuilt. The Port of Gulfport is being expanded and elevated, and
importantly, the defense industry has a strong presence in the
area.
Biloxi is the home of Keesler Air Force Base, a major training
facility, and Gulfport, the state's second largest city, is the
home of the U.S. Navy Seabees, the shipbuilder for the Navy.
Including NASA's Stennis Space Center, Lockheed Martin and Northrop
Grumman, other military installations and aerospace and geospatial
companies dot the area.
The unemployment rate for Gulfport-Biloxi was over 9.1 percent for
December 2011. Leisure and manufacturing jobs appear to have
stabilized without significant changes year-to-year since January.
For job seekers, major employment areas are office and
administrative support, food preparation and service,
transportation and material moving, education and
healthcare.
