About... Greensboro, North
Carolina lies along Interstates 85 and 40 in the central
piedmont region of the state. The area was the site of the
Revolutionary War battle of Guilford Courthouse, in which
Nathaniel Greene forced British General Cornwallis to retreat to
Virginia. The town benefited greatly when the railroad was
routed through it in the mid-1800s. The last meeting of the
Confederate cabinet took place here in the closing days of the
Civil War.
After the war and into the twentieth century, Greensboro grew
quickly along with its textile industry. A major event of the civil
rights struggle took place here when students from North Carolina
A&T University decided to protest segregation at the
Woolworth’s Cafeteria.
Many of the old textile jobs have moved overseas, but the city is
now a regional hub for many corporations. Greensboro has two major
universities: NC A&T and UNC-Greensboro.
Aside from the two
major hospitals and various government institutions, the largest
employers are Bank of America, American Express and Tyco
Electronics.
