About... Situated on the
edge of both Dallas and Fort Worth, the “town” of Grand Prairie
takes a little bit of its culture from both of its larger,
northern neighbors. While the city can easily pass for
slow-paced suburb, it also has much to offer in the way of
sophisticated arts and exciting nightlife.
Grand Prairie is, indeed, somewhat divided in its sensibilities. On
the one hand, it is a thriving bedroom community with large numbers
of residents commuting to both Dallas and Ft. Worth. On the other,
it has maintained its own identity with a strong regional identity
that has consistently resisted incorporation by its larger
neighbors.
Outside of its commuters, the city is heavily dependent on the
aeronautics and prison industries. In particular, a Federal Bureau
of Prisons complex computes and archives the accrued time served
and time remaining of all Federal prisoners. In addition, Grand
Prairie is host to several high-tech manufacturing facilities run
by Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopter and Vought Aircraft.
While the city has its own downtown that caters to families and
couples, most cultural and artistic attractions are located just a
few minutes’ drive to the north in Dallas, Arlington and Ft.
Worth.
