About... Fort Wayne is a
city of over 250,000 located in the northwestern corner of
Indiana. The wider metropolitan area encompasses the counties of
Allen, Wells and Whitley, totaling less than half-a-million
residents. The Midwestern city's unique historical roots evolve
from the pre-Revolutionary War trading period with the French
and Algonquian Indian tribes.
Fort Wayne has recently been highlighted as having the best job
growth figures in the United States, showing over six percent in
2011. Its mayor has cited health care, the defense industries and
education as some of the strongest growing employment areas.
Standing at the confluence of the Maumee, St Joseph and St. Mary's
Rivers, an impressive manufacturing base was built from commerce
and transportation trades as German, Polish and Irish immigrants
furnished labor for automobile and utility companies. Parks and
museums have always been an important part of the city's tradition,
and the city has a vibrant tourist industry.
General Motors Truck and Bus Group continues a long established
truck-making industry in Fort Wayne. A once significant
manufacturing industry is currently shifting to such major
employers as the Parkview Health System, the leading Lincoln
Financial Group Insurance interest and optic fiber plants belonging
to Verizon Communications.
