Long noted for its
dedication to outdoor activities and as the home to the track
and field powerhouse, Oregon University, Eugene is often called
the “World Capital of Track and Field.” The most noted runner
from this area was the inimitable Steve Prefontaine and it is
also the birthplace of athletic shoe giant, Nike.
The economy of Eugene is largely based around the government and
university systems although the Peace Health Medical group is the
area’s top employer. Various outdoor-oriented sports companies and
renewable energy companies have recently moved to the area. As
such, Eugene continues to bolster its reputation as an
environmental mecca for socially conscious companies.
The city has always been gracious towards the countercultural and
alternative lifestyles. There are large contingents of “hippies”
and bohemians. Still, the city maintains a vibrant mainstream
artistic culture with numerous museums, galleries and even a Bach
Festival every year.
The people and business atmosphere here are certainly geared
towards the environment and the outdoors. In fact, it has taken on
the new moniker of the “World's Greatest City for the Arts &
Outdoors.” In any event, the city has proven itself to be
pro-business and affordable, and provides an excellent quality of
life for its residents.
