About... A conservative
bastion in the liberal state of California is difficult to find.
The city of Escondido, a suburb located just north of San Diego,
is one such place. In fact, it is regularly voted one of the 25
most conservative cities in the entire United States.
Originally, the city was, almost exclusively, a farming community
famed for its grapes, citrus fruits and most recently avocados. In
the last half century, however, robust economic expansion in San
Diego and the rest of the region has led to the creation of immense
housing developments and Escondido has almost no agricultural land
remaining.
Still, with this economic growth came new opportunities and
downtown Escondido is now a bustling hub of restaurants, hotels,
art galleries and the Valley View Casino. In addition, the city
known as The Hidden Valley is a short drive to the beaches of the
Pacific coast or to the skiing in Snow Valley or on Big Bear
Mountain. In short, the city provides all the comforts of its
larger neighbor to the south but with the added benefits of lower
taxes, reduced crime and greater overall affordability.
