About... For over a
century, this northwestern Pennsylvania town was the westernmost
terminus for the vaunted Erie Canal that connected the Atlantic
Ocean to the Great Lakes. Cargo of all types made the journey to
feed, cloth and build the cities of the American Midwest and the
city prospered from the trade.
In the 21st century, Erie is still heavily dependent on
manufacturing but its emphasis has become more technologically
advanced and includes high tech plastics and biofuels. The economy
has also grown to include substantial healthcare, education and
tourism sectors. The “Gem City” is renowned as a gateway to the
recreational aspects of the Great Lakes and, most notably, of the
Presque Isle State Park. There are also casinos, race tracks and
other entertainments of every variety.
Perhaps surprisingly, Erie, with a population of under 200,000 has
its own philharmonic, ballet and opera companies. Its downtown area
is regional mecca for artists and cultural devotees. For the more
thrill oriented, there is always the Lake Area Speedway.
In short, this city on
the southern shore of one of the Great Lakes offers hospitality
for visitors, a pro-business climate and an affordable, quality
way of life for its residents.
