About...
Elizabeth, the county seat of Union County, is the
4th largest city in New Jersey with a population of
just over 120,000 in the 2010 census – an increase of 3.7% over the
previous ten years. Mentioned by Popular Science magazine in 2008
as one of "America’s Greenest Cities," Elizabeth is located on the
banks of the Elizabeth River.
Notable business firsts include the first automobile assembly
line in the state, first submarine to be accepted by the U.S. Navy,
and the first Singer sewing machine (The Singer Sewing Machine
Company had its first factory for mass production located in the
city in 1863).
The industrial "backyard" east of the city is home to the Port
Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest ports in the
world, as well as Bayway Refinery, a major are employer producing
230,000 barrels of petroleum-based products per day for New York
and New Jersey consumers.
In the aftermath of the Great Recession, the unemployment rate
in Elizabeth City was a stubbornly high 11.8% in December 2011. But
job seekers be advised: with portions of the city covered by an
Urban Enterprise Zone (reducing tax rates and offering other
incentives to businesses) and the 30-acre, 2 billion dollar
mixed-use development "Celadon" underway on the Port Newark Bay,
the city seems well positioned to take full advantage of the coming
economic recovery.
