About... Dover is the
capital of Delaware, Kent County seat and the second largest
city in the state. For its 36,000 residents, most of its economy
involves the state and local governments and the Dover Air Force
Base. The city has a 37 percent African American population with
historical roots.
There are many
museums, including the Biggs Museum of American art with
colonial period artifacts. The Green, the village square of
government buildings, reflects the original laid out design by
colonial entrepreneur and governor William Penn. The city has
twice-a-year major NASCAR racing on the famous "Monster Mile"
track.
The unemployment rate
was 7.2 percent April 2012. Economic sectors appear to be
reaching stability in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The
mining, logging and construction and trade, transportation and
utilities, other services and leisure and hospitality sectors
have shown minor job losses year-to-year. Education and health
services, government and professional and business services
sectors have shown gains.
Besides the
government, major employers include Bayhealth Medical Center,
Dover Downs race track and refrigeration & heating
manufacturer Sunroc, LLC. Job seekers may find recent job lists
and resources at the Delaware JobLink website. Other resources may be found at the
Kent County Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce website..
