About... The city of
Detroit has a population of 713,000 residents, and is the seat
of Wayne County. Known as the "Motor City" due to its influence
in domestic motor vehicle production, it is the centerpiece of a
greater metropolitan area that encompasses over 4 million
people.
The city is most famous for its role as the headquarters of
America's automobile industry. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler
are all based here and collectively employ over 10,000 city
residents.
Other notable
industries include bio-medical research, health care, finance
and advertising. The public service and education sectors are
substantial employers as well, with the Detroit Public School
system and the city government being the top two employers in
the city.
Detroit's economy has been marked by tumultuous highs and lows
since its peak as an industrial giant during World War II. Though
the population of the city proper is less than half what it was 40
years ago, the metro area surrounding it has seen corresponding
increases.
A high frequency of
poverty, low wages and high unemployment rates are still cause
for concern, but with the resurgence of the auto industry and a
revitalized downtown, new workers have reason to be optimistic
that their search will bear fruit.
