About... The Wright
Brothers experimented with early aerodynamics at their bicycle
shop in Dayton. Rooting Ohio's tradition of invention and flight
research, the city is the birthplace of famed General Motors
engineer Charles Kettering and the location of the Air Force
Museum and aerospace research at Wright-Patterson Air Force
Base, the city’s largest employer. The historic Dayton Agreement
peace accords were reached at the Base.
The home of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the current population of
142,000 residents includes 42.9 percent African Americans. Dayton
centers Ohio's southwestern Montgomery County industrial area
including 840,000 residents.
The city's economy has evolved from manufacturing to service
industries and it has shown positive recovery from the recession,
reaching an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent December 2011 from
July's 10.0 percent. Job growth sectors have been trade,
transportation, and utilities and professional and business
services. Manufacturing, information, financial activities and
mining, logging, and construction sectors are stabilizing.
Top employers include Premier Health Partners, Kettering Health
Network, Reynolds and Reynolds Company, Wright State University and
the online legal repository, LexisNexis. The city has a thriving
culture of theater arts and distinctive foods and has been lauded
as a good job market for college graduates.
