About... Columbia’s 108,000
residents comprise a college town as the fifth largest city in
Missouri and the seat of Boone County. Most of the residents
have at least a bachelor’s degree. It is the home of the
University of Missouri and Columbia and Stephens Colleges.
The city’s protection as a liberal bastion in the center of the
state by Union soldiers during the Civil War has seen its statue
maintained today as a progressive, liberal bastion. Sometimes
described as College Town USA, the nation’s largest research
reactor is located at the University.
The University is the major employer, followed by the University
Hospital and Clinics, the Columbia Public Schools, Boone Hospital
Center, the city and Shelter Insurance Companies. The MBS Textbook
Exchange is the nation’s largest depository of textbooks. State
Farm Insurance and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs are also
major employers.
The most common occupations are post-secondary teachers,
management, sales and related workers, computer specialists and
cooks and food preparation workers. In December 2011, the
unemployment rate was 5.6 percent, down from 5.7 percent in 2010.
The unemployment rate for Boone County fell from 6.3 percent in
2010 to 5.9 percent in 2011.
