Nicknamed the
“City of Roses” and home to one of America’s largest parks,
Chico, California, is a beautiful city in northern Sacramento
Valley. Bidwell Park occupies almost twenty percent of the
city’s area, and offers a nature center, hiking, environmental
education, golf and swimming spots.
The City of Roses’ economy is based on the local university and
shopping destinations. California State University, Chico employs
almost two thousand people and draws over fifteen thousand students
to the area. Other major employers include a medical center, the
city government and the local school district. The city also
benefits from its status as a regional destination. A local mall,
downtown boutiques and many big box stores attract money to the
city and offer jobs.
The city offers college sports via its California State University
Campus. Bicycle trails are abundant, and the city is surrounded by
diverse farms. Several farmers’ markets offer fresh produce to
residents.
Amtrak, a local airport, pedicabs and public transportation serve
the city.
In 2000, Forbes Magazine ranked Chico as number one on the “Best
Places in America” list. With the city’s ample green space and
robust economy, it’s easy to see why.
