About... Cheyenne got its
name from the Native American Indian tribe. Its 59,000 residents
form the state capitol of Wyoming and the county seat of Laramie
Country, centering 92,000 residents. The city's largest employer
is the F.E. Warren Air Force Base, helping forge a robust public
economy that is enlarged by the state government and the Laramie
County School District.
Other major employers included the United Medical Center and the
Union Pacific Railroad. Known for its cowboy traditions, Cheyenne
is becoming a major telecommunication infrastructure, boosting a
strong fiber-optic backbone. It's attracting a federal
supercomputer research center and a large Microsoft cloud data
center.
The March 2012 unemployment rate was 6.7 percent. The mining,
logging, and construction job sector demonstrated growth while all
other sectors but education and health services have stopped
declines. The city expects to begin construction on a new Wal-Mart
and Menards. Further major construction is expected on hospital
expansion.
Cheyenne's strong business climate in retail and business services
has been nationally recognized. There's a Lowe's distribution
center among major companies that include EchoStar Satellite Uplink
Center, Century Link (formerly Qwest), Quark Software, Sierra
Trading Post, Hitching Post Inn, Grobet Precision Manufacturing and
Jeld-Wen Window Factory.
